Happy birthday to me,
happy birthday to me,
I'm one year closer to dying and I haven't yet conquered the world beneath my tread but I'm happily married so the me that started this journal would be surprised on a whole multitude of levels,
happy birthday to me!
"Seriously, I figured that by this point I'd be ruling the world or dead. Married was never on that list of things. 18 year old me would never believe this sh*t." Current Mood: older

TJ Class of 2001's 10th reunion shindigs were last night & today. Jessi & I went. It was great to see people I hadn't seen in so long, or even in a little while. But the neat thing was finally getting to show Jessi where I came from, in a very real way.
I don't know. I'm a little overwhelmed by nostalgia, but....in a good way, you know?
To sum up? It was a good day.

|It Goes *Ding* When There's Nerdy Stuff!
Item 1) Armand "Samuel" Bucaycay Alacbay is the current head of the TJ Alumni Association.
Item 2) The 10th anniversary reunion of the class of 2001 is less than a month away. I will be in attendance.
Item 3) The cast and crew of "Doctor Who" made this video
to celebrate David Tennant's tenure on the show. It was only released to the public less than a week ago.
Coincidence? I think NOT.
"It's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly.... timey-wimey.... googly.... stuff." Current Mood: amusedly nostalgic

So, for those who aren't in the area/aware of it, we just had an earthquake hit -- 5.8 or 5.9 on the Richter scale, in Mineral, VA, with the shocks being felt as far as Quebec. We're all fine here, just to reassure.
It lasted maybe 10, 15 seconds; I noticed something shaking, and figured it was the heavy equipment that was being used nearby this morning. But it started shaking much harder, at which point the boss screamed for everyone to run outside, now!!!!! I walked out quickly. Got in touch with Jessi, who was off today, and confirmed that she and Madison (our cat) were fine.
So now I've experienced a relatively powerful earthquake. Something to check off the life experiences list, I suppose.
I'm fine -- I took Geoscience back in the day!!" Current Mood: intrigued

So my grandmother, Marie Bay, passed away this morning at 5:30. She'd not been doing well for a while, but....still.
If you could just say a prayer/keep her in your thoughts/whatever befits your particular religious affiliation, I'd appreciate it.

Oh, my childhood just got a helluva awesome shock. This
is the first 9 minutes of the new Thundercats remake that starts at the end of this month.
Except it's not a remake -- it's a SEQUEL.
I just watched this. And deep down within my cynical soul, a little 4 year-old me looked up at present-day me. And I looked back at my younger self. And my younger self leapt up into the air, and we fucking high-fived. Because this shit is AWESOME. You can have your Michael Bay Transformers and your GI Joe live-action movies. I've got THIS.
"Between this and My Little Pony, it's like I'm a little kid again -- except this time, I can buy AS MANY TOYS AS I WANT!!!!!" Current Mood: child-like glee

|Circle of Life Cycling Around and Such
So, my 28th birthday was yesterday. I think I understand another bit of growing up now, in that mostly, it was like just about every other day -- get up, go to work, come home, go to game night (OK, every other Tuesday for me). The fact that I am now 28 instead of 27? Surprisingly inconsequential in my own mind. Woohoo, divisible by 4 & 7, rather than being a cube!
On the other hand, an old friend from college (hi, Adam) and his wife had his first child yesterday, at roughly the same hour I was born, just, you know, in 2011 instead of 1983. We gifted the parents with a book, as inspiring a child to read with the gift of literature is only apropos. However, as I am sympathetic to the parents, the book was the new children's classic "Go the F*** to Sleep
" (I was a colicky baby, according to my parents). So a gift to both child and parents. Truly, my generosity knows no bounds, yes?
"Let's be honest, it was that or Where's My Cow

I have determined that one of the great small pleasures in life is sitting on one's couch for an hour or two, with nothing pressing to do, and with a purring cat curled up and snoozing on one's lap.
This has been your Deep Thought for today.

|Katsu, 10 years on.
Katsucon 17 is coming up next weekend.
It will mark 10 years since my first anime convention, 10 years ago -- Katsucon 007, in Crystal City.
I shudder to think how much money I've spent at conventions since then -- too much, to be sure, and not something to contemplate too closely. But I've also gotten to meet a lot of great people (hi Rachel!), and have some incredible experiences (like this
). Not to mention that Katsucon 2005 helped start Jessi & me down a path that eventually led us here, to marriage and all that shit.
Now, Katsucon is being extremely stupid this year, with new policies (banning ALL fanart, period, because it's illegal -- except for people who pay an extra $500 for a dealers' room table? whatisthisidonteven). Unless things change, it's looking like Jessi & I won't be in Artist's Alley next year. But still. I don't know, it's just....something to think about.
And now I'm irked because I can't find any of my goofy Ranma 1/2 cosplay pictures from so long ago. CURSE YOU GOOGLE THE SEARCH ENGINE!!!!
"Ore wa....yeah, no, I don't actually speak Japanese. I suppose I'm old enough to leave the spouting of random Japanese phrases to the young 'uns." Current Mood: contemplative

So I don't really do memes much anymore, but this one....yeah.
"BBC book list", a meme stolen from Ted
Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here. Instructions: Copy this into your NOTES. Bold those books you've read in their entirety. Italicize the ones you started but didn't finish or read only an excerpt.Tag other book nerds. Tag me as well so I can see your responses!( Da ListCollapse )
So....out of 100 total, with the "average" being 6, I've read 26, and partially read another 9. So, not too bad.
"Yeah, yeah, I promised pictures of the cat. Coming soon, OK? But comic depiction here
!" Current Mood: curious

So, yes, it has been a good long while.
*brushes off dust*
So. We got a cat. That's the biggest news. Pictures will follow shortly. Her name is Madison, and she is highly affectionate. She enjoys curling up on/next to people. It is normally adorable -- less so, however, when it takes the form of her jumping on my bladder at 2 AM.
Yeah, when she gets used enough to the apartment to be put out for the night, she is being put out for the night. Sorry, kitty. ~_^
Other than that, though, not much has been happening. Work, game nights, the comic, etc. The Reston Library had its semi-annual book sale, but that
book still remains out of reach. You know the one.
And Jessi & I are planning on attending the Rally to Restore Sanity
/Keep Fear Alive March
. It should be....interesting.
And much congratulatory huzzahs to Ted
, who just recently got engaged. Mazel tov!!
"Woo, activity!" Current Mood: content

So, we have a cat.
Let us see how this works out.
Pictures to follow. Also, a more substantial update to follow (tl;dr: enjoyed Scott Pilgrim, life continues apace.)

Our cat, Samus, who adopted us a few weeks ago, is gone. His original owners....yeah. Claimed is a harsh word, but.
Jessi & I are both pretty heartbroken right now. We'll be OK, but........yeah.
"No quote right now." Current Mood: depressed

So, yes, I hit the big 27 today. The last such exponential integer that any of us reach (since the next would be 4^4, or 256....yeah, yeah, proving nerd creds.)
Not a bad day overall, even if it did involve the daily grind. But work wasn't too bad, all things considered; I got several books, and something which I have been covetous of for some time -- the Beatles mono box set. As a long-time Beatles fan, getting 16 albums in the original mono mixes? WANT. And now I have. So, I must now decide which to listen to first. Oh, decisions.... *gryn*
Anyway, hope everyone is doing well, and a mighty belated birthday to Ilsa
, who hit this cubic integer milestone two days before me. *shakes fist*
"Birthday picture cat quote!" Current Mood: jubilant

|And It Was GLORIOUSLY Weird.
The Weird Al concert was last night.
Oh. My. GOD.
The entire thing was a glorious array of nerdity on display -- the audience was letting their Weird flag fly. I saw at least one shirt stating "Hey, that snorkel's been just like a snorkel to me!", so we knew that we were among peers.
And then the show started. We were barely ten feet from the stage. It started with a polka medley -- the only downside was that the only song I recognized in it was
Poker Face, which means that I am OLD.
Nonetheless. We heard a bunch of new material (including Maggie's unofficial theme song, "Skipper Dan
"), and so much classic stuff. He played "Another One Rides the Bus", for God's sake! And a number of costume changes for specific songs -- the Nirvana outfit for "Smells Like Nirvana", and "DARE TO BE STUPID" in the Devo suits!
The best part, though, was the fact that the entire audience was singing along the whole time. Nerd unity, people!
Well, that or when he launched into "I Wanna Be Ur Lover" in a red tiger-striped suit, came down into the audience, and sang to my wife, directly, that his love for her "was like diarrhea -- [he] just couldn't hold it in." Yes, Weird Al pseudo-serenaded my wife, and was but a few inches from me. And I am totally all right with this. ~_^
And for an encore, he came back out in Jedi costume with a legion of local Star Wars cosplayers, and sang both "The Saga Begins" and "Yoda".
All in all, it was an awesome night, and one helluva birthday present. And any other concert I see from now one will have a nearly insurmountable task in trying to surpass this show. Except for Weird Al -- because, man, we're definitely going to be there the next time he tours.
